Rye

Rye is an excellent winter cover crop. It quickly forms a large green biomass, making it a good ground cover. It also grows well on soils with low nutrient content. It is a good nitrogen fixer and organic matter producer. It is a good weed suppressor, the plant has allelopathic properties, i.e. root secretions reduce the germination of weed seeds.

As a cover crop, it is sown immediately after the early main crop (peas, beans, early potatoes) is ready and harvested.
